What changed

This is the first weekly reading for the United States, so there is no prior score or regime to compare against. It ranks second of 13 regions.

Economy and markets

The IMF expects US growth of 2.3% in both 2026 and 2027. October’s flash composite PMI was 57.6 (58.4 in September), with new orders at a 4.5-year high and manufacturing at a 53-month high of 56.0. Consensus for Q3 GDP is around 3.0-3.2% annualised, after 2.2% in Q2. Inflation is 3.7%, the policy rate is 3.75-4.00% and the 10-year yield is about 5.0%. US equities are up 10.8% year to date and 13.8% over a year, and have beaten MSCI ACWI by 1.3 points over three months and 2.3 points over six. FactSet puts Q3 S&P 500 earnings growth at 29%. Valuation is the weakest factor (-49): MSCI USA trades on 19.4x forward earnings, well above Europe at about 14x.

Capital flows and rotation

Flows are rising (score +38) and the US sits in the Leading quadrant at the "potential opportunity" stage. Three-month ETF flows are modest, at 0.3% of fund size. TIC data show $300.7bn of foreign net purchases of long-term US securities in August, a sharp swing from private net selling in July.

Currency

The dollar’s score is a mildly positive +7, but the 1-year view points lower and the 3-5-year view is lower to uncertain. MUFG and the Reuters poll expect US yields and the dollar to ease in 2027. For USD-based investors there is no currency effect. EUR- and GBP-based investors would see returns in their own currency reduced if the dollar weakens as forecast.

Risks and what to watch

Geopolitical risk is Moderate. The main pressures are the Middle East conflict (Brent near $110), tariff escalation including Section 338 tariffs on Canadian goods from 30 October, and a Fed with a tightening bias. Dates: FOMC decision on 28 October, Q3 GDP and September PCE on 29 October, big-tech earnings on 28-29 October, and the midterm elections on 3 November.
