Weekly brief: Australia & NZ open Neutral at -7: stable politics, fading growth and rising outflows

Regime: Neutral (score -7, Balanced), Slowing economy – stable politics are the main support while capital leaves and growth fades.

What changed

This is the first weekly reading, so there is no previous score or regime to compare. The region opens at -7, ranked 8th overall; Australia scores -7 and New Zealand -9, both Neutral. Geopolitics (+27) and market performance (+12) are the strongest factors and capital flows (-46) the weakest.

Economy and markets

The IMF trimmed Australia to 1.9% growth in 2026 and 1.6% in 2027, with CPI near 4%. The S&P Global flash October composite PMI fell to 47.7 from 51.3, the first contraction in five months. In New Zealand, Westpac cut 2026 growth to 2.5% and expects CPI to reach 4.2% in Q4. Regional equities are up about 9% year to date but have lagged the MSCI ACWI by 0.5 points over three months and 4.7 points over six; New Zealand is down about 3% over three months. Australian large caps at about 18x forward earnings look full for a slowing economy.

Capital flows and rotation

The model reads ‘outflows increasing’, with three-month ETF flows of about -12.5% of fund size (Australia -12%, New Zealand -21%). Australia sits in the Improving quadrant with no clear rotation signal, while New Zealand is Lagging. No official September-October portfolio flow data were found for either country.

Currency

Currency scores are weak: AUD -20 and NZD -28.6. Both have an upward one-year view as MUFG expects broad dollar weakness (AUD towards 0.73, NZD 0.60); the longer-run view is flat to higher for AUD and flat for NZD. A recovery would help USD-based investors; for EUR and GBP-based investors the effect also depends on their own currency against the dollar, so check the heatmap. Soft PMIs, NZ unemployment at 5.6% and Chinese deflation are headwinds.

Risks and what to watch

Geopolitical risk is low; the main risks are imported fuel costs, China demand and 10-year yields near 5.2%. Watch the 27-28 Oct FOMC; 2 and 4 Nov final Australian PMIs; Q3 CPI and the RBA November meeting; early-November NZ labour data; and the RBNZ December statement, where Westpac expects a hike to 3%.
