What changed
This is the first weekly reading for Canada, so there is no previous score or regime to compare. The model opens at +19, ranked 3rd overall, with capital flows (+48) and market performance (+44) strongest and geopolitics (-30) weakest.
Economy and markets
The IMF’s October 2026 outlook cut Canada’s 2026 growth forecast to 1.1% (1.7% in 2027), well below the world’s 3.1%. Inflation is 3.1% against a 2.25% policy rate, and five-year inflation expectations rose to 3.91% in the Q3 survey. Equities are up about 20% over a year and 12% year to date, 4.4% above their 200-day average, and have beaten the MSCI ACWI by 1.4 points over three months and 0.2 points over six. MSCI Canada trades at 15.7x forward earnings, a discount to the US.
Capital flows and rotation
The model reads flows as ‘inflows increasing’, with three-month ETF flows worth about 16.5% of fund size, placing Canada in the Leading quadrant at the Outperforming stage. Official data are softer: Statistics Canada reports foreign holdings of Canadian securities fell C$17.3bn in August, the first divestment of 2026, though the year-to-date total is still +C$161.6bn.
Currency
The CAD currency score is -7.4. The one-year view is upward, helped by oil above $100 and an expected fall in US yields; the three-to-five-year view is flat, as close US ties keep CAD range-bound. A firmer loonie would lift returns for USD-based investors; for EUR and GBP-based investors the effect also depends on their own currency against the dollar, so check the heatmap.
Risks and what to watch
Geopolitical risk is high: US trade policy and the Middle East energy shock, partly cushioned by oil exports. Watch the 27-28 Oct FOMC; 28 Oct Bank of Canada decision (a hike to 2.50% about 80% priced); 29-30 Oct EU-Canada summit; 30 Oct August GDP and US Section 338 tariff changes; mid-November securities-transactions data.
