What changed
This is the first weekly reading for the United Kingdom, so there is no prior score or regime to compare against. It ranks sixth of 13 regions.
Economy and markets
Economic momentum is the strongest factor (+30). October’s flash composite PMI rose to an eight-month high of 53.1 (52.0 in September), with new orders at the fastest pace since September 2024 and manufacturing output at a 25-month high. The IMF raised 2026 growth to 1.3% from 1.0%, with 1.2% expected in 2027. Inflation is 3.5%, among the highest in the G7, the Bank Rate is 3.75% and the 10-year gilt yield is about 5.4%. UK equities are up 7.0% year to date and 11.5% over a year, but have trailed MSCI ACWI by 0.8 points over three months and 3.4 over six. MSCI United Kingdom trades on 12.1x forward earnings, cheap against US and European peers.
Capital flows and rotation
Flows are the weakest factor (-30), with outflows increasing and three-month ETF outflows of about 9.6% of fund size. The UK sits in the Improving quadrant at the "economy improving" stage: fundamentals are firming before capital has followed. No official non-resident gilt or equity flow data for the past three months were found.
Currency
Sterling’s score is -7.4, with a 1-year view of flat to slightly higher and a steady 3-5-year view. MUFG expects only modest gains, mainly from broad dollar weakness. Weak September retail sales (-0.4% m/m) and fiscal constraints limit the upside. Strong PMIs pushed EURGBP to 17-month lows on 23 October. For GBP-based investors there is no currency effect. USD-based investors could gain modestly if the dollar weakens as forecast, while EUR-based investors face a broadly neutral outlook.
Risks and what to watch
Geopolitical risk is Moderate. The main risks are fiscal credibility for gilts around the Budget, an energy-price shock keeping inflation high, and weak consumer confidence. Dates: the Autumn Budget on 28 October (fiscal headroom expected to shrink to about GBP15bn, with a possible bank tax) and the early-November Bank of England meeting, where a rate hike is widely expected after the strong PMIs.
